Working Too Hard? You Are Doing It Wrong! Three Tips To Help You Work SMARTER And NOT HARDER

The Formula For A Successful Work Experience

Working with outsourcing companies in the Philippines as a web designer or web developer can be quite demanding at times. This can often result in a stressed out web designers/developers. When that happens, they can lose interest in their job and end up producing mediocre work. As an employer that is the last thing you want to happen to your designers and developers. Especially, if you firmly believe in their capabilities. If you ask a web designer or developer why they are so stressed out, they might say, “This is because I am working too hard!”. How should you respond? Well, you can always give them a rest day.  However, the better response is to introduce them to the successful work policy, “Work smarter, not harder!”

Work Smarter, Not Harder

The successful work policy “work smarter, not harder” has become a trend in a number of companies. This resulted to stories of reduced stress and increased productivity in employees. Belle Beth Cooper, a content crafter at Buffer, even has her own experience with this particular culture:

“One of the things I love about the culture at Buffer is the emphasis on working smarter, not harder. Our team is all about getting plenty of sleep, exercise, and recreation time, so our time spent working is as productive as it can be.”

Now hopefully you can see how effective this successful work policy is. So, how can you start getting your employees and even yourself to start applying this successful work policy? Here are a few tips to do that!

Tips To Work Smarter, Not Harder

  • Plan your day. The moment you sit at your desk you have to plan all the tasks you need to do within the day, like making a “To Do” list. This does not just help you keep track of what you have to do, it also helps focus the mind. Set priorities and break down big tasks into components, so they look more workable. How do you set priorities? Well, do the stuff you DO NOT WANT TO DO first. That way they are out of your hair faster and it can make your day seem lighter as well!
  • Take breaks. According to Jeff Haden of www.inc.com, “On average our brains are only able to remain focused for 90 minutes; then we need at least 15 minutes rest.” Now you might think that taking a lot of breaks means you get less work done, but that is not the case most of the time. That 15-minute break is enough to refresh your mind so you can focus well! It is sort of like how we need to sharpen a pencil whenever we use it too much and all the lead has run out.
  • Don’t measure your time, measure your results. Sometimes you might tend to become too time-conscious that you focus on how much time you have spent as opposed to how much stuff you got done. Try thinking of “I should finish this” instead of “I should finish this in an hour” and see what difference it can make. The less time-pressured you make yourself feel and the more focused you are, the more effective you will be at finishing one task after the other. It is also a good idea to keep track of the stuff you finished by keeping a “Done List” as a form of motivation.

Take Action!

There are several other ways for you to work smarter and not harder. Well, maybe you can even come up with an original tip yourself! Have these tips in mind, search for more if you have time and don’t forget to share this with your co-workers and/or employees!
